Thailand situated north of the equator in the tropics, giving it a hot and humid climate all throughout the year.
The average temperature throughout most parts of Thailand ranges between 28-35°C (82-95°F), with the exception being the mountainous northern pockets, and around Chiang Mai when the temperature can drop to as low as 5°C!
Thailand is home to three distinct weather seasons:
The Cool Season: From around November to February when it doesn’t rain very much and the temperatures are generally at their lowest. During the cool season, hiking in the north of the country would require some winter clothing and a sweater. The Cool Season is one of the most popular times to visit, when finding a reasonably priced flight or accommodation can prove to be somewhat difficult.
The Hot Season: From March to June when temperatures around the country often reach as high as 40°C (104°F).
The Rainy Season: Runs for approximately four months between July and October, although it doesn’t completely begin until well into September. This is the time of year when many regions become hit with tropical monsoons and flooding affects many of the low-lying areas.
- Local variations can be found throughout the different regions, noticeably in the south-east of the country, when the hot season takes place between May and October, and the rainy season between November and February.
Clothes:
Travellers planning a holiday to Thailand would most most comfortable wearing shorts and a t-shirt. The only exception is if travelling to the northern hills of the country during December and January, when the overnight minimum can approach freezing point.
