Thailand's Theravada Buddhism: Monks on a pilgrimage
Religion and beliefs
Thai culture is influenced strongly by the Buddhist religion. Unlike China and Vietnam, Thai’s follow Theravada Buddhism, which resembles the traditional Indian school of Buddhism and places a high degree of value on monasticism. Thai places of worships are known as wats or temples, which are colourfully decorated in golden colour and usually feature multple dome-shaped roofs which become increasingly acute towards the highest point. Temples are usually occupied by monks, who can also be seen walking around the city during the morning to receive their food from people as a sign of respect.
Thai’s generally have a very strong belief in spirits, with one of the pre-Buddhist traditions that has stood the test of time being that of the spirit house, known as saan phraphuum. This is most often found at the corner of a home or business, and generally positioned in an unlucky spot, as to ward off evil spirits and bring good luck. One of the most famous spirit houses in Bangkok would have to be Erawan Shrine, situated in the centre of Bangkok and shields the Grand Hyatt Erawan Hotel from the evil spirits. Built in 1956 on what was originally a space used for executions, the shrine is now one of the most popular and busiest in the city.
