
Getting around Patong and Phuket can be pricey. But with the right know-how, it's easy to get from A to B without breaking the bank.
Getting around Patong Beach and Phuket
Airport Transfers
The vast majority of visitors to Patong would arrive at Phuket International Airport , situated at the north of the island. The airport is roughly 40km to the heart of Patong Beach, costing 600 baht in a hired car (referred to by many tour operators as a “Limousine”).
Metered Taxi
Metered taxis are also available to take arriving passengers from the airport to Patong. This will cost 400 baht, usually higher. Avoid the touts outside the airport terminal at all costs.
Shared Minibus
One of the cheaper methods of transport to Patong from Phuket International Airport is with a shared minibus. A ride to Patong costs about 180 baht, or 150 baht for the return trip.
Travel, local style!
Not for the faint of heart and those who have never travelled before, local buses can take travellers to Patong for roughly 85 baht. This does involve a change in buses at Kathu, otherwise you could find yourself in the middle of Phuket Town.
Getting around the local area
As Patong Beach is a highly touristy area, there is a multitude of transport options to choose to get around Phuket. However, being a tourist centre, getting around can sometimes prove to be expensive. Transport adds up over time, so travellers are urged to get out of their comfort zone and try some of the options available to get around the island.
Regular buses are a cheap way to travel between Phuket Town and Patong. Running every 30-45 minutes, buses cost only 25 bath per journey and provide a serious alternative to spending 200 baht or more each way on a motorcycle or in a taxi.
Within Phuket Town, one of the quickest and most efficient modes of transport is Motorsai, which is effectively a motorcycle taxi who takes a pillion passenger. Negotiate the fair up front From Phuket Town, travellers can explore the east coast of the island for a fraction of the cost of a guided tour or hiring a driver.
Hiring a car
Renting a vehicle with or without a driver is a viable option for those who want to explore the island at their own pace. The safest bet is to go with a large hire company as opposed to cheaper costs on the street. Hiring off the street can be risky in the event of damage to the car. An international drivers license is generally required to hire a car from a reputable firm.
Renting a motorcycle in Patong is a cheap way to get around, but be warned. Thai police are constantly on the lookout for foreigners on motor scooters without a license. This is especially the case around the tourist areas of Patong Beach and the surrounding areas. Thai traffic conditions are also highly unpredictable and drink driving is a significant problem within Thailand.
