Phuket has a colourful history, developing much of its wealth from rubber and tin, however in recent years, tourism has by far become the primary source of income for many of the island’s inhabitants.
The vast majority of the people living in Phuket follow Theravada Buddhism, however, Thai-Chinese, Muslims and even sea gypsies inhabit the island.
Phuket city is the main city on the island, situated about 13km from the main tourist area of Patong Beach, and easily accessible by taxi, motorcycle taxi or bus. The city is the centre for business and government on the island, however travellers can still find some interesting and unique things to see and do, as well as partake in some fantastic shopping.
Phuket City, the island's centre for business and government. Also a great place to head to check out some cut-price shopping and escape the tourist scene at Patong Beach.
