Besides private and semi-private companies running buses and vans, public transport in Bangkok is as good as you could find anywhere else in the world. Visitors to Bangkok will arrive to find a transport system that would rival practically anywhere on the planet, in terms of cleanliness, safety and frequency of service.  

BTS Skytrain (Thai: Rot Fai Fah)

Features 2 lines, the Sukhumvit Line runs from the north of the city at Mo Chit, down Pahonyothin Road to Siam Center. The route then snakes its way over Sukhumvit Road to the former terminal of On Nut, and then on to Bearing, close to the Bitec complex.

Mor Chit - Transfer with Chatuchak Park MRT.  Travellers making their way to Chatuchak Weekend Market should get off at this station.

Saphan Khwai – Paolo Memorial Hospital

Ari - Soi Ari, situated downstairs from the station features some great little eateries, and, of course, fantastic street food!

Sanam Pao –

Victory Monument – Close to a number of shopping centres, including Century Plaza.  Soi Rangnam, a popular street for food and classy outdoor bars is a short walk from Victory Monument.

Phayathai – Passengers can change here for the Airport Link service.

Ratchatewi – Close to Pantip Mall and a Pratunum. Also one of the closest BTS stations to Khao San Road, the Grand Palace and Wat Pra Kaew.

Siam – The closest that you will find to Central Station.  Passengers can change here for the Silom line.  Nearby attractions include Siam Square, Central World and Paragon, which can be seen from the platforms and accessed by a direct footbridge from the ticket office.

Chitlom –  Situated close by some of Bangkok’s higher-end shopping malls, including Gaysorn Plaza.

Ploenchit – Close to a major business area, a number of hotels around the Lumpini/Soi Ruam Rudee area. The US embassy is a five-minute walk from the station.

Nana – An entertainment hub at night, Nana Plaza is about five-minutes walk from the BTS station, while the Arab district is situated on the opposite site of Sukhumvit Road.  There are some great Indian food restaurants near here.

Asoke –  Passengers can change from BTS to Sukhumvit MRT Station.  Asoke is surrounded by large shopping malls and a prominent business district in the city.

Thong Lor/Ekkamai –  These two stations are about as far as tourists would need to travel.  There are some great little night spots around here, which are mostly frequented by cashed up Thais.

The Silom Line from National Stadium (at MBK Shopping Complex), and makes its way to Silom (Sala Daeng Station), followed by Sathorn and then over the river to Krung Thon Buri and Wong Wian Yai, where the line currently ends.

The Silom line will continue on further to the south-east of the city, terminating at Bang Wa, which is expected to open at the end of 2012. 

Passengers can change between the lines at Siam station, which is situated next to Paragon Shopping Complex in the center of Bangkok.

Maximum fare: 40 baht

MRT (Thai: Rot Fai Tai Din)

Bangkok’s MRT operates on a single line between Bang Sue in the north of the city to Hua Lamphong in the south.  The route snakes its way under some of the most built up areas of the city, including Silom, Lumpini,and  Sukhumvit, before serving the eastern edges of the CBD.  The route runs underneath the busy Ratchadaphisek Road, with stations at Pharam 9, Thailand Cultural Center and Huay Khwang, before eventually turning left towards Central Ladprao Shopping Centre and Union Mall, before passing Chatuchak Park and terminating at Bang Sue.

Passengers can connect between MRT and BTS at Chatuchak Park, Silom and Sukhumvit.  

Due to differences in ticketing systems, passengers will need to purchase a new ticket when changing between the two services.
