Bangkok bombing suspects linked with Marxist, Islamic anti-gov group

Four Iranian suspects alleged to have been behind a bomb plot that went members of a far-left wing anti-Iranian political group.

Local newspapers quote the Shia leader of Thailand, Syedsulaiman Husaini, who said that the suspects wanted the incident to cause embarrassment to Tehran.

The group known as MEK is strongly opposed to the current Iranian government.

Mr. Husaini said that the suspects belonged to the Mujahedin-e Khalq Organisaton, which is known as MEK, MKO and the People’s Mujahedeen Organisation of Iran (PMOI). One of the aims for the group, which has been on the US Department’s list of foreign terrorist organisations since 1977, is to overthrow the Iranian government.

It is believed that Thai authorities are not unfamiliar of the opposition group.  Reports claims that Iran’s national security agency had pointed out to members of the Thai government that members of MEK were planning a terrorism campaign in Thailand.

Authorities allege that the group were aiming to target Israeli interests in Bangkok.

MEK was originally formed in the 1960s and played a strong role in the country’s revolution in 1979.  The progressive and pro-western government of  Shah Mohammed Reza Pahlavi was replaced by a Ayatollah Khomeini who instituted Iran as a fundamentalist Islamic state in 1979.

The group was banned from Iran shortly Khomeini came to power.  Just two years after the revolution, MEK was expelled from the country after trying to stage an uprising against the government.
